Business Intelligence: Chicago Board of Trade

Challenge

The Office of Investigations and Audits (OIA) was challenged with monitoring several million trades per day to detect potential trading violations and analyzing market activity as mandated by the Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Additionally, CFTC also mandated that eighteen months of data be retained for potential investigation purposes that resulted in a data warehouse that is several terabytes.

Solution

Perficint was engaged by the Technical Data Products (TDP) division of CBOT to analyze, architect and implement a BI solution. Perficient was instrumental in developing a solution using Oracle as the database, Informatica as the ETL and a custom VB .Net as the reporting platform.

Features

  • A high performance, highly scalable, completely custom BI solution that can generate “on-demand” canned and ad-hoc reports
  • An application that is very extensible to accommodate future regulatory needs

Benefits

  • Ability to analyze trader activity and establish market patterns under a minute based on about 25 million trade transactions
  • Ability to identify potential trading violations by brokers and/or trading firms based on complex algorithms
