Millions Invested in AMI. Ready to Deliver More Value.  

A leading energy provider had made significant investments in its infrastructure. Millions of AMI devices had been deployed across its service territory. Telemetry data was flowing from meters, routers, transformers, and substations. The foundation was solid.  

AMI data was already being used to support automated billing and basic outage alerts, but teams across the organization still operated across multiple systems. Meter operations, outage management, maintenance, engineering, and customer service each had a partial view of network conditions. Additional coordination and manual effort were needed to align information and act with confidence — especially during major events.

At the same time, pressure was rising. Regulators and customers demanded improved grid reliability, faster restoration, and greater transparency.  

Leadership saw an opportunity. By activating the data already being generated across their evolving grid infrastructure, they could reduce operational costs, improve response times, and strengthen the customer experience — unlocking more value from their AMI investments.

 

Building One Intelligence Layer. Accessible to Every Team.

Working with cross-functional stakeholders, we helped our client get greater value from its AMI infrastructure by creating an enterprise-wide intelligence layer. Building on top of an existing Databricks on Azure data foundation that ingests IoT telemetry from AMI systems — meters, routers, transformers, and substations — we integrated, contextualized, and operationalized data for near real-time use across teams.

The first step was to ensure the reliability of the AMI network itself. By incorporating connectivity data from meters, field area routers (FARs), and supporting cellular infrastructure, teams can now monitor whether devices are online, properly connected, and reporting as expected. This includes validating meter-to-network relationships, such as correct routing through FARs and towers, as well as alignment between meter identifiers, service points, and customer records. By validating and enriching existing AMI data, we ensure that downstream insights are based on a complete and trustworthy view of the network.

Next, we added physical context. To do this, we integrated the utility’s geographic information system (GIS), linking AMI assets to physical infrastructure — circuits, poles, vegetation, terrain, and service boundaries — through layered mapping. This allows teams to analyze network performance in the context of the physical grid.  

On top of this unified and contextualized data, we delivered a “single pane of glass” interface where teams can visualize and interpret network conditions in real time.  

This gives teams the ability to:  

  • Visualize meter, FAR, and outage status in real time  
  • Toggle layers and identify hotspots across the network  
  • Drill down from system-level views to individual devices  
  • Identify discrepancies between AMI signals and outage system

The result: AMI telemetry is now more accessible, contextualized, and actionable across the organization. Data quality improved, operational visibility increased, and disconnected system views are a thing of the past.

 

One Platform. High-Impact Operational Use Cases.

A key use case was outage validation.

By integrating AMI signals with the organization’s outage management system (OMS), the platform flags discrepancies between reported restoration and actual meter activity in real time. When outage systems indicate power has been restored but meters remain offline, teams are alerted immediately — reducing premature closeouts, improving response accuracy, and accelerating restoration.

Grid Transparency. A Stronger Customer Experience.

The final step was to enhance the intelligence of the customer experience.  

We designed and embedded an interactive GIS map within an Adobe Experience Manager page, enabling customers to search by address, city, or zip code to see infrastructure improvements in their area. Filters and supporting content, such as news and videos, provide additional context.

GA4 tagging and user testing close the loop, allowing the organization to measure how customers actually engage with grid reliability initiatives — and continue improving the experience. Everything needed to build trust through transparency, in one place.

The energy provider can now demonstrate ROI from AMI — not just in theory, but through measurable operational improvements.  

By integrating AMI data with operational systems and building a unified, geospatial view of the network, operations teams now have near real-time visibility into grid conditions. Delivered through an intuitive, “single pane of glass” interface, this shared perspective has driven strong adoption.  

It has also strengthened collaboration across operations, engineering, and customer service — especially during high-volume events. Issues are identified earlier. Fewer unnecessary truck rolls. Fewer customer calls. More accurate, consistent outage response.

Customers see the impact too. More accurate restoration updates, localized visibility into grid improvements, and improved digital experiences reduce confusion and build trust.
