Challenge + Opportunity

Despite clear traffic laws prohibiting motorists from passing school buses when their STOP arm is deployed, violations continued to occur at alarming rates. These infractions put children at serious risk in the “danger zone”—the area around the bus where students board and disembark.

Our client, a leading designer and manufacturer of fleet safety solutions, recognized the urgent need for a more effective enforcement mechanism. It wanted a solution that could detect violations in real time and provide indisputable evidence to law enforcement with the goal of reducing infractions, improving motorist behavior, and, most of all, protecting students.

Transforming School Buses into Smart Safety Platforms

We partnered with the client to design and implement an edge AI-powered solution that automatically detects and records vehicles illegally passing a school bus and packages the evidence for law enforcement.

Buses are equipped with six strategically placed cameras to capture activity on both sides of the vehicle. These cameras work in tandem with a GPS module and an IMU sensor to provide precise location and motion data. The core of our solution, though, is the custom neural network models that we developed and trained for license plate detection, vehicle recognition, and speed estimation. These models were designed to interpret complex roadside scenes and identify violations in real time.

To ensure the models can operate efficiently and reliably in the field, we deployed them on an NVIDIA Jetson Xavier onboard computer. This edge device runs multiple deep learning models locally, eliminating the need to stream high-resolution video to the cloud—a costly and often impractical approach. The onboard computer processes data instantly, enabling the system to detect violations as they happen and compile evidence packages that include video footage, license plate data, geolocation, and speed metrics. The data is then securely transmitted to the cloud for validation and ticket processing.

To support compliance with privacy regulations and protect students’ identities, we also developed a face reduction module that automatically detects, tracks, and obscures faces in recorded footage, while maintaining the integrity of the evidence.
